On 6 September 2026, A24 put out a teaser for Nathan Fielder's documentary about Elizabeth Holmes. In it she looks straight at him, unblinking, and says she would never deceive him — then asks, "Why would I deceive you?" The clip cleared 32 million views in three days and immediately became a reaction template, recast as a spouse denying something extremely small. The joke is the word. Nobody says deceive. People say lie, or fib, or I didn't do it — "deceive" is courtroom vocabulary deployed over a pumpkin patch, and that gap is the whole bit. It is also why the line survives without the image: a stranger volunteering that they are not deceiving you is funny cold, on a shelf, with no caption attached.
