What separates it from actual sport is not the skill level but the stated order of operations. The competition is secondary. That is not a joke told about beer leagues; it is close to their constitutional principle, and it is why people keep showing up for decades to a fixture with no stakes, no table anybody checks, and a warm-up that is widely regarded as optional. These hats are worn by the participant, not by somebody making fun of one.
