Humbly Accepting My 15-Year Paperweight Hat
Companies mark tenure with service awards, and the people who earn them have a particular kind of pride. The Quarter Century Club is a real institution: Washington State University's has been active since 1934, counts more than 2,300 members, and held its 93rd annual celebration in 2026. Utilities, hospitals and corporations run their own versions for 25 years of service. At the other end, a Wall Street Journal report notes that the typical employee stays in a job for about four years, which makes anyone past ten years an outlier. Vendor copy for the 10-year gift says those employees have become institutional knowledge keepers, and a Blind commenter put it more bluntly: corporations need lifers.
The gift itself is the running joke. Ten-year and fifteen-year recognition awards are catalog products, often a freestanding lucite block, and one Straight Dope poster answered it best: it's not the paperweight, it's the recognition.
These work anniversary hats take the long-timer's side. Badges name the milestone and the club; the longer designs are about outlasting executives, appearing in the onboarding video and knowing where the good scissors are. Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Give one to the colleague hitting their year.
