Urbanist & YIMBY Zoning Nerd Hats

Urbanism has turned into a hobby with its own memes, vocabulary and meeting schedule. The NUMTOT Facebook group, short for New Urbanist Memes for Transit-Oriented Teens, started in March 2017 and has more than 200,000 members, and r/fuckcars was created in February 2016. Strong Towns' Charles Marohn coined the word stroad for the hybrid of street and road that serves neither, and Strong Towns writers argue that surface parking is almost always the lowest, worst use of land. The housing side is just as devoted: CA YIMBY says its message of Build more homes is short enough to fit on a T-shirt, and a millennial homeownership rate of 47.9 percent against 78 percent for boomers explains the energy. Searches turned up no YIMBY or parking-minimums hats on Etsy, Redbubble or Amazon, only organization-run merch, so a funny, non-org version is open ground. These hats carry the YIMBY and URBANIST badges plus lines about duplexes, upzoning, abolishing parking minimums, dressing up for public comment and treating council meetings as a night out. Every line is the wearer's own pride, never aimed at a neighbor. Every hat is custom embroidered on a dad hat.
