Goblin mode was Oxford's 2022 Word of the Year, chosen by public vote with 93% of more than 340,000 votes. It first appeared on Twitter in 2009 and went truly viral in February 2022. Oxford defined it as behavior that is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations. The mom internet has its own version of that spirit: Upworthy collected 15 moms sharing the unhinged parenting moves they refuse to apologize for, including one who started scheduling her breakdowns and another who told her kids she had retired from motherhood.
