The Target Was Defective Hat
Clay-target shooting is a big, young sport hiding in plain sight. The Scholastic Clay Target Program counted 1,690 active teams, 5,352 coaches and 19,076 athletes in 2024-2025, and its 2025 national championship at the Cardinal Center drew nearly 3,000 athletes and over 14,000 event entries. Behind those numbers are trap leagues, school teams and sporting-clays weekends, and a lot of dads who drive to every one of them.
The humour lives in the call and the excuse. A shooter shouts one word, pull, and then the target breaks or it does not. Scoring is blunt: a hit has to break into at least two discernible pieces, and a miss is lost. A perfect round is 25 straight. When a target survives, the excuses come out, and the Browning and NRA lists of reasons for missing are a genre of their own: the sun was in my eyes, the birds were going too fast, I do not like this cartridge. A shooter once wrote that everyone seems gifted with a unique genius for missing whatever target he sets his sights on.
This collection gives that culture a hat: two badges, the one-word call set as three beats, the safety rhythm of ears on, eyes on, pull, and the excuse taken to its logical end.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one to the range, or give one to the clay-team dad who has a standing Wednesday.
