The 4Runner has its own mythology. Owners swear by the 4.0L as a million mile motor, and one owner reported hitting 300,000 miles on a 1998 4Runner as a big win. The EPA rates the 4WD model at 17 combined mpg, and owners cheerfully admit it is slow and thirsty and they would die for it. Resale is part of the story too: after five years a Tacoma loses about 28.5 percent of its value and a 4Runner about 32.4 percent, so used prices stay stubbornly high.
