Somewhere between 2020 and now, the tip jar became a screen, the screen learned to spin, and a person started watching you while you decided. Nearly nine in ten Americans now say tipping culture has gotten out of control, and roughly a third call it exactly that. More than half admit they tip out of social pressure rather than service — which is a very polite way of saying they tipped out of fear. The numbers say the standoff is finally tipping back. Digital tips on pickup orders have fallen from 78% in 2022 to 62% this year. Coffee-shop tipping dropped from 46% to 39% in twelve months. Fast food is down to 22%. Tipflation got a name, a Wikipedia entry and a decade of op-eds, and somewhere in there it stopped being a private grievance and became a shared one. This collection is for the person at the front of that line: the one who found the Custom Tip button, entered $0.00, and handed the screen back without breaking eye contact. Or with no eye contact at all — that works too.
