Time Traveler Hats

Back to the Future turned 40 in 2025, and Universal put all three films back in theaters from July, followed by an IMAX re-release on 31 October. The stage musical marked the anniversary with a special performance at the Adelphi in London on 3 December 2025. That is a lot of people quoting 88 MPH and 1.21 gigawatts in public, and both phrases already sell on embroidered caps and tees. This page covers that crowd, plus the broader time traveler identity that runs through jokes and memes. The humour has its own register. The "time traveler conversation" meme took off after a first tweet on 27 February 2019, with its roots in the Doctor Who episode Twice Upon a Time, and it works because the traveler is clueless about the present. The old bar joke ("We don't serve time travelers here," so a time traveler walks in) has circulated since at least 2011. Spoilers you are not allowed to share are part of the genre.
