Sweet-and-spicy has been creeping up on the American palate for a decade, but 2026 is the year it stopped being a flavour note and became a category. Hot honey is up around 230 percent in four years and is now on menus at DiGiorno, Utz and Kellanova. Chilli is turning up on mango, guava and pineapple. Korean glazes and Mexican chili-lime got there first and the rest of the country finally caught up. A thing that big needs a name, and the name it got is swicy. The word is doing what rizz did — one syllable of nonsense that everybody suddenly understands. And like every good food word it stopped being about food almost immediately. Swicy is a way of describing a person: pleasant on arrival, considerably more complicated by the end of dinner. The sugar lands first and the heat turns up about half a second later. Built around the word itself, rendered nine ways — arched in gold on black, reverse-arched, flipped, set small, set in slab and serif and italic across cranberry, khaki, pink and stone — alongside the lines that go with it. Hot honey on everything. Not sweet, not spicy, swicy.
