King Of Spades Arched Hat
Spades is a game with a rulebook, a vocabulary and a reputation for loud, proud trash talk. It emerged in the Midwest in the late 1930s, around Cincinnati, spread through the military in World War II, and went mainstream when returning veterans and college students on the GI Bill carried it home. Anyone who has sat at a Spades table knows the language: books are tricks won, a set costs you your bid times ten, ten bags cost you 100 points, and a blind nil is worth +200 if you make it and -200 if you do not. A Boston is a bid to take all thirteen tricks.
The culture is strong enough to have its own writing. A Terrance Hayes poem imagines a documentary about Spades, and Nick Cannon and Courtney Bee host a show called We Playin' Spades. Walmart already lists a "Six And A Possible" Spades shirt and King of Spades shirts, while text-based Spades hats are thin on the ground.
These hats speak the table's language. There is a SPADES badge, the market-proven KING OF SPADES and SIX AND A POSSIBLE, a big-joker-little-joker-deuce roll call, and lines for the player who has never reneged, the one who backs up the trash talk, and the one whose partner outranks the spouse.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one to the cookout, or give one to whoever never loses a game of Spades.
