Silent Book Club & Reading Hats

Silent Book Club is a real and rapidly growing thing: everyone turns up to the same bar or cafe, reads their own book in silence for an hour, and then talks only if they feel like it. There are more than 950 chapters worldwide and roughly 400 of them registered in 2026 alone. It is a book club for people who did not want a book club. This collection is about the whole posture around it — bringing a book somewhere a book is not required, being visibly unavailable, having strong opinions about dog-earing pages, and insisting for the eleventh time that people should read the book first. It is the last socially acceptable way to ignore a room while standing in the middle of it. Set in serif and italic serif, because these are asides and confessions rather than declarations.
