Robotics It's Designed To Do That Hat
FIRST Robotics Competition bills itself as "The Varsity Sport for the Mind," and the numbers back up the pitch: the 2026 Championship in Houston, April 29 to May 2, was billed at more than 50,000 participants from over 100 countries. Connecticut, Minnesota and Texas sanction robotics as a varsity activity, and many other schools run letter programs for it. The year runs on a six-week build season that starts at the January kickoff, then pit crews, drive teams and regionals, with FIRST's own watchwords, Gracious Professionalism and Coopertition, on the wall.
Community lore fills in the rest. Robots held together with zip ties and duct tape fill Chief Delphi's threads on the most jury-rigged things teams have seen, a Custom Ink list of team slogans includes "Robotics: It's designed to do that," and the argument over how much mentors should touch the robot never ends. ROBOTICS, ROBOTICS MOM and ROBOTICS DAD are the plain badges, and they already sell as hats elsewhere. The longer designs cover the drive team, the mentor who does not touch the robot, a robot that may be smoking, and zip ties and denial. IT'S DESIGNED TO DO THAT and IS THE ROBOT SUPPOSED TO BE SMOKING? each come in a second colorway.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one to the next regional, or give one to the robotics parent who drives there.
