The five-day mandate came back. Paramount went full-time in January, Instagram in February, Fidelity in April, PNC in May, and TikTok's September deadline is the one everybody is counting down to. California state workers picketed their own return order on July 1. The stated reason is always collaboration. The lived experience is a ninety-minute commute to a hot desk, headphones on, joining the same video call you used to take from your kitchen. So people adapted. Badge in, get a coffee, be seen, leave — a maneuver so widespread it earned a Merriam-Webster slang entry and prompted at least one Fortune 500 employer to build software specifically to catch it. Nearly six in ten hybrid workers admit to it. The mandates measurably backfire too: rigid five-day policies run about double the attrition of flexible ones. These hats are written in the register the whole thing deserves — flat, procedural, unbothered. No exclamation points, no rage. Just a plainly worded statement of what is happening, embroidered on a structured six-panel cap you can wear to the office you did not want to return to.
