Oregon Trail Generation Hat
The Oregon Trail began on 3 December 1971, when Don Rawitsch, Bill Heinemann and Paul Dillenberger built it at Carleton College. MECC turned it into a school-lab staple, and by its 1994 IPO the game's sales were about one-third of MECC's revenue. More than 65 million copies had sold by 2011, and an Apple film adaptation is in early development, with Will Speck and Josh Gordon attached.
The humor lives in the game's own vocabulary applied to adult life. The pace was grueling, the rations were meager, and every river meant a choice: caulk the wagon and float it, or ford. The hunting cap is the famous one, since you could only carry 100 pounds of meat back to the wagon no matter how much you shot. Players typed in the names of hated teachers for their party members, and could write their own tombstone epitaphs when the dysentery arrived.
YOU HAVE DIED OF DYSENTERY has already sold as a sweatshirt and as tees, and OREGON TRAIL GENERATION is the label Anna Garvey coined in 2015 for the Xennials, roughly 1977 to 1983. No Oregon Trail game hat turned up in a search of Etsy and Redbubble, so this is an open lane.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear it for the old computer lab, or give one to the friend who always forded the river.
