I'm Walkin' Here Hat
New York has its own way of talking, and the people who talk that way wear it with pride. West Side Rag's guide to New Yawk tawk, accent, attitude and humor lists the greatest hits: I'm walkin' here, getottahere, what's it to you. The word deadass began in New York City in the late 1990s and 2000s and has an Urban Dictionary entry from 2003 that defines it as completely and honestly serious. I'm walkin' here is tied to Dustin Hoffman in Midnight Cowboy.
Some of it is geography as much as slang. The New York Times stylebook observes that few besides New Yorkers stand or wait on line, and one survey found 23.67 percent of New York State says on line against 5.49 percent nationally. Secret NYC translates it's a short walk as it is not a short walk. At the bodega, Tasting Table calls bacon egg and cheese with salt, pepper and ketchup the standard, and reports that a vast majority of New Yorkers order it with ketchup, though the BECSP minority will argue.
These hats put the dialect on the head: a NEW YORKER badge, the walkin' here warning, the bare DEADASS, the full bodega order, and three sentence designs about pace, speech and distance. Fuhgeddaboudit already lives on our Gabagool page, and Long Island, Upstate New York and New Jersey have their own hats, so this page is the city's talk.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat.
