New U.S. Citizen Hats

USCIS welcomed 818,500 new citizens in fiscal 2024, and every one of them walked out of a ceremony with a certificate of naturalization, a small flag and a room full of family who wanted something to wear in the photos. The road there has its own running jokes. Applicants file the N-400, wait for an interview and, since October 2025, study a bank of 128 civics questions, of which an officer asks up to 20 and stops at 12 correct answers. One survey found about 91 percent of applicants pass the test, against about 40 percent of native-born Americans. New citizens write that they always had to carry the green card around, and their forum posts open with the same words: finally, journey, officially. DHS calls the room "Americans by choice." These hats speak for the new citizen. NEW U.S. CITIZEN and NATURALIZED CITIZEN are the plain badges, the phrase the Walmart and eBay citizenship tees already sell. The longer designs carry the in-group jokes: a thousand forms, the green card turned red, white and blue, a hand raised at the oath, the civics test passed, and a NEW AMERICAN who has been here fourteen years. FROM GREEN CARD TO RED, WHITE AND BLUE and MOM, I'M AMERICAN NOW each come in a second colorway. Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat.
