Mixed-breed dogs are 53 percent of US pet dogs, according to a Mars Veterinary census that sampled more than 36,000 of them, and German Shepherd is the breed found most often in their mix. Yet breed merchandise mostly belongs to purebreds; one Etsy mutt-merch shop says it started because merch existed for specific breeds but none for a mutt. A DNA-test expert on NPR called such a dog a fruit salad, a Heinz 57, and the home DNA kit made the joke common: a Boston Globe test that sent the same dogs to four companies got nearly all-different results. National Mutt Day, founded in 2005 by Colleen Paige, is observed on July 31 and December 2. These mutt hats are for the owner who cannot name the breed and does not need to. Two badges, MUTT MOM and MUTT DAD, carry the searched terms, and WHO YOU CALLIN' MUTT?, PURE MUTT, SUPER MUTT and HEINZ 57 MUTT claim the word with pride. The longer designs carry the DNA-test jokes: $99 to learn a dog is 4% Chihuahua, a test that came back GOOD BOY, six dogs in a trench coat, and a rare breed called mine. The DNA-test line and the trench-coat line each get a second colorway. Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat.
