I Promised My Wife I'd Stop Buying Guitars So Now I Build Them Hat
Luthier is the word builders argue about. A long thread on luthiersforum.com debates who gets to use it, and 'Master Luthier' draws eye rolls. The same forums hold the real jokes. Asked whether a guitar was his best ever, one builder answered, "No, that will be the next one." Another remembers that the answer to how long it takes is "2 weeks and 3 years," and that the next question is always how many you build in a year. One member calls building guitars "wood crack".
The hobby is big. A community-stats tracker puts r/Luthier at roughly 148,000 members, and one market-research estimate values the guitar kit market at $152 million in 2025, which is a lot of people building a first guitar and then a twelfth.
These luthier hats are written from the bench. LUTHIER and GUITAR BUILDER are the badges. The rest are the builder's confessions: twelve guitars built and none sold, hide glue and high hopes, nine times out of ten it's the nut, and a promise to a wife to stop buying guitars, kept by building them instead. THE NEXT ONE IS THE GOOD ONE borrows the builder's oldest answer. Two of the lines get a second colorway.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat, for the builder in your life or for you.
