The Mainland Is For Errands Hat
Island time is a real product search, and so is island life: Casco Bay Lines sells a Ferry Dad hat inspired by island time, and sellers of Block Island hats and sweatshirts do steady business. But the islanders who live the phrase year-round keep a different calendar. On Peaks Island, off Portland, Maine, about 900 people stay through the winter, a number that swells by roughly 2,000 to 4,000 in summer, and the ferry that makes the island is a 20-minute ride. As one local puts it, life on the island seems to begin once the 7:15 ferry has left.
These hats are written from the dock. Block Island has a slogan, There's always another ferry, and the MV Times lists the clues that you're an islander: you refer to Europe as off-Island, and you take a ferry to go grocery shopping. Ice and weather can cut islands off from the mainland altogether, so the schedule is the clock and the mainland is a place for errands. Two plain badges, ISLAND TIME and ISLANDER, carry the search terms; the rest are bits about ferries, January and the one time someone left.
This page is the island itself, with no sand or surf jokes, distinct from Beach Bum & Beach Life and from Hawaii Local & Pidgin. Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one on the 7:15, or give one to the islander in your life.
