Hot Air Balloon Pilot I Fly A Picnic Basket With A Fire In It Hat
Hot air ballooning has its own crew culture, and every October it fills the sky over Albuquerque. The 2026 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta ran Oct 3-11 with 901,720 in attendance, 584 registered pilots from 18 countries and 47 states, 114 special shapes and 1,057 volunteers the event calls Navigators.
The people around the basket speak their own language: envelope, gondola, burner, dawn patrol, mass ascension. One dawn patrol crew chief reports jumping out of bed at 2:30 a.m. After launch the crew loads the inflation equipment into the chase vehicle and follows, and once the pilot figures out where to land, the pilot radios them. Balloonists also carry two bottles of champagne, one for the pilot and crew and one for the landowner. Pilot Mark Whiting calls it the breakfast of champions, champagne and propane.
These hot air balloon hats cover the pilot, the chase crew and the festival regular. Badges name the job, and the sentence designs carry the jokes: the pilot who cannot steer, the picnic basket with a fire in it, the crew taking directions by radio, and a cornfield recovery division for the landings that end in somebody's field. BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS and the picnic basket line each get a second colorway.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one to launch morning, or give one to the crew chief who got up at 2:30.
