Home canning skipped a generation: most Baby Boomers never did it, so plenty of people who receive a jar of peaches have no idea the jar is supposed to come back. Canners know better. Jars are looked at as an investment, and anyone who has watched the pots that once seemed huge shrink to tea cups next to a batch of tomatoes understands the arithmetic of too many jars in spring and never enough in fall. These home canning hats are for the people who live that arithmetic. The badges name the job: HOME CANNER, and CANNING QUEEN, a phrase that already prints on canning aprons. The research for this collection turned up no canning hats at all, so the jar-return rule and the lid pop finally have a place to live above the eyebrows. Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one at the water bath, or give one to the canner who knows exactly how many rings she owns.
