Read The Treatise. Hit The Guy. Hat
Historical European martial arts, HEMA to the people who do it, is sword fighting learned from the source: the surviving fight books of the 14th and 15th centuries. Fiore dei Liberi wrote his Fior di Battaglia in 1409, and Johannes Liechtenauer's teaching survives as the Zettel, a rhyming-couplet poem his followers treated as the secret of the longsword. Practitioners describe the hobby as a book club where disagreements are settled with the blade, and a double hit, both fencers striking in the same tempo, is scored as a failure to defend.
These HEMA hats speak in that voice. The badges say HEMA and LONGSWORD. The sentence designs carry the in-group tone: END HIM RIGHTLY, which already sells as a HEMA shirt, ZORNHAU, the wrathful strike, the moral failing of the double hit, the Fiore versus Liechtenauer argument, and the fighting style learned from a book written in 1409. The chronicle-narrator line is for the desk worker who took up the longsword anyway.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one to sparring night, or give one to the club member whose gambeson has never seen a washing machine.
