Handweaving & Loom Hats

The Handweavers Guild of America was founded in 1969 with a mission to educate, support and inspire the fiber art community, and its weavers have kept a humor of their own. Handwoven magazine's joke page has weavers joking that friends have weft them alone, and it ties the warp speed gag to Lt. Commander Scott weaving tweed in the Outer Hebrides. Warping is described as the least creative part of the job, the part that has to come first, and one weaver reports roughly nine hours of it, mostly threading. A Loomspindle writer confesses to buying a floor loom after promising a spouse and themselves that they did not need one. These handweaving hats are for the person who owns the loom, or several. WEAVER and HANDWOVEN are the plain badges. The rest carry the craft's habits: dressing the loom as the real work with weaving as dessert, a slow warp speed, four looms and one chair, and a Loom Owners Council that dates itself to 3000 BC. WEAVING BECAUSE KNITTING ISN'T WEIRD ENOUGH is a slogan already sold on mugs and yarn bowls from Pawley Studios, and I'M A LITTLE WARPED is the weaver's favorite pun as a self-diagnosis. Guilds and shops teach rigid heddle classes for beginners, and the knitting slogan shows how close the two crafts sit. Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one to the guild meeting, or give one to a weaver.
