My Grandkids Don't Go Home They Are Home Hat
Over 2 million grandparents in the United States were responsible for raising their grandchildren in 2023, according to the Generations United fact sheet built on Census data. The average age is 60, about 63 percent are women, about half have been at it five years or more, and about 55 percent are still in the labor force, so for many it is parenting on top of a paycheck. Generations United calls these households grandfamilies, and the name has stuck. The guides lean on the same second-time-around idea: Montana State Extension publishes "Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Parenting the Second Time Around," and another book is titled "Grandparents as Parents: A Survival Guide for Raising a Second Family."
These hats are for the grandparents doing it. GRANDFAMILY and RAISING MY GRANDKIDS are the plain badges. GRANDMA BY BIRTH MOM BY HEART and GRANDPA BY BIRTH DAD BY HEART are the sincere ones, and the rest are dry, in the voice of someone who already did the PTA once: parenting the second time around, retirement postponed, and grandkids who do not go home because they are home. Nothing here jokes about the parents or blames anyone. RETIRED? NOT WHILE I'M RAISING GRANDKIDS and MY GRANDKIDS DON'T GO HOME THEY ARE HOME each come in a second colorway.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Choose one for yourself, or give one to the grandparent who never got to send them home.
