Sonographer & Ultrasound Tech Hats

Sonographers spend the day with a probe in one hand and a poker face on. Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month, led every October by the SDMS with AIUM, ARDMS, ASE, CCI and SVU, is the stretch when the profession gets noticed, and the field covers vascular, abdominal, OB/GYN, cardiac, breast, pediatric and musculoskeletal scanning. The ASE even runs an "I Look Like a Sonographer" campaign. The jokes come from the job. Lists of what pregnant patients wish they could say to their tech include "What's With The Silence?" and "Just Tell Me What You See Already," while sonographers on forums point out that most will not call a baby's gender until about 16 weeks because the room for error is high. The profession's other running complaint is physical: AuntMinnie reports that 90% of sonographers have shoulder pain.
