The Print Is Always Wrong Hat
Machining is a precision trade that gets no slack for being quiet about it: the BLS counts 288,300 machinist and tool-and-die jobs in 2025, and the trade has its own running feud with the engineering print and its own first language, G-code. Nothing live in the catalogue names it directly. Funny Welder Hats is the nearest trade in the shop, but welding's register is heat and sparks, while machining's register is tolerance, for parts and for people, measured in tenths of a thousandth rather than guessed at.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. The badges name the trade plainly, MACHINIST and CNC MACHINIST, while the sentence designs carry the shop-floor grievances: a thousandth read as a mile, chips in places that need no explaining, a setup that eats five hours for a part that runs in five. THE PRINT IS ALWAYS WRONG and I HAVE TIGHT TOLERANCES FOR EVERYTHING carry the trade's two real tempers, the print nobody trusts, and a standard the machinist holds everyone else to as well. OLD SCHOOL MANUAL MACHINIST keeps the hand-wheel trade in the frame next to the CNC side of the shop. The two strongest lines, I HAVE TIGHT TOLERANCES FOR EVERYTHING and THE PRINT IS ALWAYS WRONG, each get a second colorway.
