Aircraft mechanics keep every flight in the air and get the blame for every delay, and this page is for the people who hold the license. The trade is short on hands: Boeing's outlook calls for 123,000 maintenance technicians in North America through 2044, the average certificated A&P in the US is 54, and the FAA issued 9,013 new mechanic certificates in 2024. Meanwhile about one-third of A&P training seats sit empty, and NPR reported in July 2026 that new graduates are walking into jobs. It is a proud, scarce trade.
The jokes here come from the market itself. Teepublic already sells hats reading The Best Aircraft Mechanics Have Beards, and the delay joke, signing off on airplanes, and the pilot's gripe sheet all come straight from the hangar. In the trade a squawk is any deficiency a pilot reports, and nothing flies until a mechanic signs for it. These hats put that pride on the wearer's head: the bearded A&P, the one who is why the flight is delayed, the one whose work leaves zero parts on the bench.
Two plain badges, Aircraft Mechanic and A&P Mechanic, cover the search terms people type. Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one to the hangar, or give one to the mechanic who has never once been thanked at the gate.
