Front Porch Hats

Porch sitting has a union. The Professional Porch Sitters Union started as a joke in Louisville, Kentucky in 1999, when Claude Stephens founded "Local 1339," and NPR quoted him saying it "is about not planning anything. Anybody can call a meeting at any time." Membership is free, and Wikipedia counts thousands of tongue-in-cheek unions in all 50 states and at least three other countries. The practice is older than the joke. Porch sitting was once a status symbol, Seaside, Florida mandated front porches to cut air conditioning use, and porch sitting appeared regularly on The Andy Griffith Show, while The Don Knotts Show made "The Front Porch" a recurring segment. Barbara Grizzuti Harrison called porches "America's lost rooms," and one essayist writes, "I come from a long line of porch sitters." These front porch hats are for people who sit there on purpose. The badges say FRONT PORCH and PORCH SITTER. The sentence designs carry the sport, the lineage and the union: three years running as champion, a best nothing, a seat taken in 1997. PORCH SITTING CHAMPION and PORCH SITTERS UNION each get a second colorway. Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one on the porch, or give one to the grandpa who never leaves it.
