The Tackier The Magnet The Better The Trip Hat
Fridge magnet collecting is a recognised hobby with its own record holders: a Cardiff collector, Tony Lloyd, was reported in 1999 to own more than 2,000 magnets, the largest collection in Europe. The habit runs on a simple travel rule. Magnets are small, so they fit in an already over-full suitcase, and it is hard to think of a place on the planet that does not sell them as a souvenir. Collectors on travel forums describe going strictly hand luggage only and bringing back the tackiest, most over-the-top magnets they can find. One blogger began collecting on August 25, 2007 in Montreal, now counts 397 magnets at an average of $4.98 each (about $1,975 in total), and measured 4,528 miles from the westernmost magnet, Denali National Park, to the easternmost, the Paris Metro. On the Chinese app Xiaohongshu, posts sharing fridge magnet collections have been reported at nearly 300 million views, with the fridge door called a travel resume.
These hats are for the collectors. FRIDGE MAGNET COLLECTOR is the plain badge, and the longer designs carry the one-magnet-per-trip rule, the fridge that has been to 31 states, the door that needs a second fridge, the detour through the gift shop, and the creed that the tackier the magnet, the better the trip. Two designs each come in a second colorway.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat.
