Net 30 is a phrase with a precise meaning and an approximate reality. It means payment within thirty days. It functions as an opening offer, from which the actual date drifts in a direction that is never toward sooner. What makes this specifically funny rather than simply grim is the etiquette. You delivered the work. You are owed the money. And yet the follow-up email must be warm, light, faintly apologetic — 'just circling back on this' — because the relationship has to survive being about money. Nobody teaches this. Every freelancer learns the exact tone within a year. These are worn by the person doing the invoicing and are pointed at the terms, never at a named client.
