Em Dash Defender Hats

Em dash users have a new problem: people who read a long dash and assume a chatbot wrote the sentence. The earliest known r/ChatGPT post on the habit is from 2024-10-02, and by early 2025 it was a full meme. A Paul Skallas tweet calling the dash a shortcut for detecting AI passed 11,000 likes on 2025-02-11, and a Reddit post lamenting that an entire punctuation mark had been invalidated passed 1,400 upvotes. Writers answered back: one tweeted that they were just accustomed to writing fan fiction, and a LinkedIn user pointed out that AI uses em dashes because writers use em dashes. The defense became a small movement. NPR covered the unofficial campaign to save the em dash from AI in November 2025, and Rolling Stone and the Boston Globe ran their own takes. Em-dash users: Unite! is a Firebrand tee, and Justice for Em Dashes appears on Ann Handley's team shirts. We found no hat. These hats are for the human writer who is not giving it up: a bare EM DASH badge, justice for the mark, a pulse as proof, Emily Dickinson as a character witness, and robots who can have the commas. The before-ChatGPT joke already lives on our AI Slop page and the semicolon on Grammar Nerd, so this page is the dash itself. Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat.
