Soft Pull Only Hats

It is a number between roughly three hundred and eight hundred and fifty, it is assembled by companies you have no relationship with, and it decides things about your life. You did not apply for it. You cannot see how it is calculated. You can, however, check it constantly, and most people do. The vocabulary around it is quietly hilarious. Utilization. Hard inquiry. Soft pull. It is the language of a medical procedure applied to whether you may be trusted with a phone contract. And the rules are genuinely counterintuitive: closing an old card can hurt you, carrying no debt at all can hurt you, and doing nothing whatsoever is often the optimal strategy. These hats are pointed at the system and its vocabulary — a safe, impersonal, universally recognised target. Nobody in the wearer's life is implicated, and everyone who has ever applied for anything knows exactly what a hard inquiry is. And the score is checked far more often than the arrangement warrants. It does not move. It was not going to move since yesterday. It gets checked anyway, on a phone, in bed, by people who would describe themselves as not especially interested in money.
