Craps is the loudest game in the casino, and also the most superstitious. Players will not say the word seven at the table; they say Big Red, the devil, or just it. A seven is welcome on the come-out roll and a disaster once a point is set. It is considered bad luck to talk to, or even touch, the shooter on a good run, and if a die hits another player's hand during the roll, many players believe the next result is jinxed. A hot table looks like what one gaming columnist describes: people cheering when the number hits and high-fiving as the roll gets hotter. The vocabulary is its own language. Dealers call yo-leven to tell an eleven from a seven. To press a bet is to double it. A hardway is a pair on the four, six, eight or ten, so a hard eight is two fours, and the hat says craps next to it so nobody reads retail slang.
