Church Deacon Hats

A deacon sits on the church board, and congregations have been making jokes about that board for as long as there have been pews. Church joke books give deacons a chapter of their own beside pastors, pews and Sunday school, which tells you the role is a recognized comic type. These church deacon hats lean into it. The amen corner is defined as a place near the pulpit occupied by worshipers who lead the responsive amens, and it is especially associated with the Black church tradition, where it was sometimes where the deacons sat. A 1960 country gospel song by Archie Campbell, Trouble in the Amen Corner, grew out of an older poem on the same subject. Carpet color, the temperature of the worship center and the wall color are the standard silly things church members fight over, which is where the carpet vote line comes from. The badges name the role: DEACON, DEACONESS and HEAD DEACON. The sentence designs carry the board's inside jokes: the boiler, the keys, the stacked chairs, the offering plate.
