Catan has sold more than 40 million copies in 40 languages since Klaus Teuber's game won the Spiel des Jahres in 1995. Teuber died on 1 April 2023 at 70, and his sons run the company. It is the gateway hobby board game, and it comes with a stable cast of table characters: the player who hoards sheep, the one who parks the robber on a friend's tile, the one who never rolls the number they need.
