My Oncologist Fired Me Hat
The chemo bell goes back to 1996 at MD Anderson, where Navy Rear Admiral Irve Le Moyne, in radiation for head and neck cancer, rang a brass bell and left it as a gift. Hospitals still install them, and in the chemo suite everyone cheers when a patient rings it. The vocabulary around that day is its own: a cancerversary, which some survivors count from diagnosis and others from the end of treatment, and NED, no evidence of disease, which is not the same as cured. Dark humor is part of it too. In patient forums, making fun of your own situation is described as a way to help beat it, and survivors say the jokes belong to the wearer.
These hats are written in that voice, aimed at the wearer's own cancer and never at anyone else's. CANCER FREE and CHEMO GRAD are the plain badges buyers search for. STRONGER THAN CANCER already sells on embroidered caps and gets a second colorway, as does the oncologist who fired the wearer. The rest cover the port coming out, a bell rung twice, a Latin pun for a chemo day and a cancerversary worth a party.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one to your last infusion, or give it to someone who just rang the bell.
