Spanish Moss Is Neither Spanish Nor A Moss Hat
Botanists spend a career correcting the grocery store. Botanically, a banana is a berry, while strawberries, raspberries and blackberries are aggregate fruits; tomatoes, avocados, grapes, kiwis and watermelons all count as berries too. Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is neither Spanish nor a moss: it is a flowering bromeliad, not native to Spain, that absorbs water through hairs on its leaves. These botany hats are built from corrections like those.
The field's other running theme is names. "Laurel" is a common name for trees in five families, and "sycamore" means different trees in the UK and the US, which is why botanists lean on Latin binomials and why writers keep asking whether that is elitist. Online, botanists describe the habit that follows: a walk that slows to a crawl because every plant needs identifying. One iNaturalist user wrote of being a brisk walker until the botany bug bit.
Two plain badges, BOTANIST and BOTANY NERD, anchor the search terms. The longer designs carry the berry correction, the Spanish moss correction and the Latin-name habit. This is the scientist's side of plants, separate from Plant Parent's watering and propagation and from Native Plant Gardening's pollinators.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one on the trail, in the herbarium, or to the next argument about bananas.
