I'd Trade My 401K For One More Book Fair Hat
Scholastic bought a California book fair business in 1982 and launched its first in-school fair, and it now runs more than 120,000 events a year, with schools raising over $240 million annually. The rest of the memory is smaller and sharper: the little catalog handed out a few days early, an order form that one writer called a buzz of permissible, wholesome consumerism, the envelope of book fair money, and a poster rack where one commenter bought only Ferrari Testarossa posters. Others recall money erasers and the chocolate calculator. Plenty of grown-ups are still at it. The Wisconsin Grown-Up Book Fair sold out in January 2024, with 2,350 attendees over two days and more than 5,800 books, and a Philadelphia version handed out free Tamagotchis. The book fair high never wore off.
These book fair kid hats treat the childhood event as an identity. Badges claim the kid and the volunteer who runs it. The sentences carry the jokes: a wish list circled in full, all the book fair money gone to erasers, a 401k offered up for one more fair. CHASING THAT BOOK FAIR HIGH is a phrase already sold on a sweatshirt, and it gets a second colorway here. Silent Book Club and Librarian hats are about reading and the job; this page is the fair itself.
Every design is custom embroidered on an unstructured dad hat. Wear one yourself, or give one to the friend who still touches every book.
